What is OCR and how does it work?

OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is technology that extracts text from images. This tool uses Tesseract.js, a powerful open-source OCR engine that runs entirely in your browser.

Which languages can the OCR recognize?

The tool supports 100+ languages including English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Japanese, Russian, Hindi, Chinese, Arabic, and many more. You can select the language before processing.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The OCR processing happens entirely in your browser using Tesseract.js compiled to WebAssembly. Your images never leave your device.

Can I extract text from handwritten notes?

The tool works best with printed text. Handwriting recognition is possible but accuracy varies depending on the legibility and style of the handwriting.

What image formats are supported?

How does Tesseract.js work?

This tool uses Tesseract.js, a pure JavaScript port of Google's Tesseract OCR engine compiled to WebAssembly. The language model (~4MB for English) downloads once and caches in your browser. All text recognition happens locally on your device — no image data is ever transmitted to our servers. This is critical for sensitive documents: medical records, legal contracts, financial statements, or proprietary screenshots that you would never want to upload to a cloud OCR service. Tesseract.js supports 100+ languages and achieves accuracy comparable to commercial cloud APIs on clear, high-contrast text.
